Swimming with the current in Miami Beach

Bold, sporty and retro looks make splash at fashion week

More than 30 swim and resort wear lines presented their 2015 collections during the recent round of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Swim shows at the beachfront Raleigh Hotel.
While plenty of basic bikinis and maillots were spotted on the runways, a more fashion-forward viewpoint described most of the shows put on by designer labels and swimwear brands. More daring and extreme styles were showcased.
The swim shows also are a place where new lines can make their initial splash in the American market. They hope to garner the attention of the fashion press and, especially buyers, who head to South Beach each July to order the latest bathing suits, cover-ups and other resort-season accessories at trade shows held at nearby venues during Swim Week.
While sexy, skimpy styles are offered up by even the most venerable swimwear houses, there are several directions embraced by designers for the upcoming resort season, which stretches from November through next spring and summer.
* Prints are bolder, with an emphasis on digitally rendered patterns and scenic imagery, often combined in a collage or patchwork manner;
* Sporty elements borrowed from what surfers and Scuba divers traditionally wear are adopted to women’s swimwear, with rash guards, mesh, neoprene and wet-suit details featured prominently;
* Handwork makes a comeback, with lots of crochet, fringe, lace and embroidery making an appearance;
* Retro is cool, with some designers reinterpreting classic high-waisted ’50s and ’60s bathing-suit styles;
* Many brought added attention to the back of their swimsuits, creating intriguing rear views;
* Black is back in the swim in a big way.

The Swimwear Trend Taking The Fashion World By Storm

Despite its unsexy name, the rash guard is fast becoming a swimwear staple…

Top of the crops: the hottest swimwear trend of the moment.

The reign of the itsy-bitsy bikini is officially over. Surfing the ocean wave from the far reaches of Australia and the States, to Blighty's shores, is the rash guard, a long-sleeved swimwear top formerly worn to prevent chafing during water sports. Sexy, right?
Love it or hate it, it looks like this new trend is here to stay. Seen at Mara Hoffman and Belusso last week at Fashion Week Swim 2014, the rash guard has already hit the high street with versions popping up in Victoria's Secret and ASOS.
But are you ready to surrender your most flattering bikini for this sporty look? It certainly has its perks. Trend-setter Rihanna showed us just how versatile the long-sleeved swim top can be, pairing a leopard-print Cia Maritima version with denim cut-offs to greet fans in Rio, before heading off for a moonlit swim in the matching two-piece. A glamorous look that works for both day and night? We’ll take it.

Devotees of the rash guard are also drawn to its flattering nature. Proud of your hard-earned holiday abs? A cropped rash guard lets you flaunt your best bits without flashing too much flesh.
It’s worth remembering that this look was originally borne from practicality, and pale-skinned beauties like Nicole Kidman have long been aware of the rash guard as a go-to beach cover-up to avoid dreaded sunburn. So if your skin turns more salmon than sun-kissed when you’re out in the heat, this new swimwear trend might be the one for you...

Barraca Chic’s resort ’15 swimwear

For Funk Fashion Week in Miami, Barraca Chic, a firm from Switzerland, debuted its Resort 2015 collection featuring Swarovski embellishments, the finest fabrics and unique silhouettes. Inspiration for this collection stemmed from the gods and goddesses of ancient Greece. Their swimsuits were highlighted with asymmetrical silhouettes and metallic gold rhombus prints.

The beachwear brand designs contemporary styles that women can wear while sailing through the islands. The 2015 women’s collection features a one-piece, high-neck style. Swarovski detailed swimsuits are available in navy and yellow, along with asymmetrical one-piece suits that are embellished with the signature crystal square.
In their men’s swimwear collection, briefs continued to bring the heat to Miami with low-cut European styles that were influenced by the Greek gods Zeus, Apollo and Poseidon. The swim briefs were modeled in navy, white, coral and olive. They all featured some of the metallic rhombus prints seen throughout the collection.
The classic Barraca Chic swim trunks were shown in olive. However, these trunks are available in a variety of colors and designed in high-quality, quick-drying fabrics that allow men to go from swimming to a beachside restaurant.
Accessories included cashmere and silk scarves, with the signature Barraca Chic logos, in shapes that are inspired by ancient Greek architecture. For this last show, Nina shoes accompanied the women’s collection. Jewelry was provided by Arme De L’Amour.

UNITE Team Makes Waves at Miami Swim Week

UNITE professional haircare team members worked backstage during Mercedes Benz Miami Swim Week 10 year anniversary launch at Miami’s Raleigh Hotel on July 17 to create a look that would last while still being soft and sexy.

Models on pedestals and as art installations, posed leaning against cars wearing gowns that echoed the auto's graphics. And as the party featured several different designers, UNITE determined a hair style that would complement all models and inspire a beachy feeling would be textured, elegant waves with movement.

How to get the look:

1.) Prep the hair with UNITE TRICKY Spray (half hairspray/half wax)

2.) Separate hair into sections and add curl using either a curling iron or by wrapping a flat iron such as the UNITE Pro-System Flat Iron.

3.) After each section is curled, mist with UNITE MAX CONTROL for extra staying power from roots to ends, wrap with fingers, clip into place and allow to cool.

4.) After hair has cooled, release the clips and spray UNITE TEXTURIZA throughout for added volume, texture fullness and hold.

5.) Run fingers through hair to loosen curls and give movement.

6.)Rub a small amount of UNITE CONUNDRUM between palms and apply to any flyways for a seamless, textured final look that provides a look of effortless beauty perfect for any day at the beach.
